During February and March, our worship services picked up Biblical themes such as would promote healthy relational living within and beyond our own community. Among the topics were: Being Light and Salt in the world, Do not violently resist evil, Be freed from anxiety to trust.
The theme for Lent was Becoming Human: Called and shaped by Jesus, Shaped by testing, Shaped by new birth, Shaped by thirst. Each of these services encouraged reflection of our individual experiences that could spawn growth for daily living and service to those around us.
Wu Ling, a Buddhist nun was present in one of our Second Hours to talk about the Buddha nature that lies within and resists the evil we confront daily. Some of us came away with mixed mindsets as to responses where blatant violation of the weak occurs within one's immediate presence.
Lois Dyck spent February in Costa Rica as a volunteer at the Latin American Biblical University.
For the fourth year in succession, another book of Southside Fellowship Memories was presented to SSF by Harry Dyck, editor. The book is comprised of memories of the past year as written by SSFers, followed by the editor's responses. This year's book also includes pages of color pictures of individuals, and also depicts life as it happens all in the interest of Southside Fellowship Memories, 2010.
A child dedication for Adele Esengo , daughter of Kendra and David Yoder Lind, was celebrated on Sunday, 4/10/11. SSFers were invited to bless Adele with additional names as she was carried about during the service.
A well attended Annual Congregational Meeting highlighted both the positions held by committed members of SSF. The invitation was offered for members to volunteer for areas in which their gifts match the opportunities for ministry. SSF is experiencing budget concerns as income has decreased while the needs in our community have increased. Another meeting is scheduled at which these concerns will be addressed anew.
The Second Annual Very Hairy Fund Raiser brought in additional funds for our banana bank. SSFers donated $$ for the privilege of barbering Harry Dyck's overlong mop of grey. Sentiments expressed to give Harry a `Mohawk' did not come to fruition, though Harry claimed some barbers were indisputably more conscientious than others. Fortunately, Jan Stair remained available in case an accident turned out to be a disaster. At last count, at least $150.00 had been donated to the cause. B.Harry Dyck.
