We didn't walk 2,200 miles, it's true, but here's the thing: we tried.
--Bill Bryson from A Walk in the Woods

GATHERING
CALL TO WORSHIP 1Kings 19:4-8
Leader: Full of fear, Elijah went a day's journey into the wilderness.
He sat down under a broom tree andprayed that he might die.
Left: ``I have had enough, Yahweh,'' he said.
``Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.''
Leader: He lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep.
Right: Suddenly, an angel of Yahweh touched him and said, ``Get up and eat.''
Left: He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals,
and a jar of water. He ate the cake and drank the water and then lay down again.
Leader: The angel of Yahweh came back a second time and touched him and said,
All: ``Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.''
Right: So he got up and ate and drank.
All: Strengthened by that food, Elijah traveled for forty days and forty nights
until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
Hymn: HWB 472 I am the bread of life
