It is not merely that they do not trust one another; th ey do not trust themselves …They cannot trust anything, because they have ceased to believe in God. It is not only our hatred of others that is dangerous but also and above all our hatred of ourselves: particularly that hatred of ourselves which is too deep and too powerful to be consciously faced. For it is this which makes us see our own evil in others and unable to see it in ourselves.''   --- Thomas Merton

BENEDICTION

It is not over, this birthing.

There are always newer skies into which God can throw stars.
When we think that we can predict the Advent of God,
that we can box the Christ in a stable in Bethlehem,
that's just the time that God will be born
in a place we can't imagine and won't believe.
Those who wait for God watch
with their hearts and not their eyes,
listening, always listening.

From Romans 10:8b-13
The word is near you,on your lips and in your heart.
. . . if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart
that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
For one believes with the heart and so is justified,
and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved.
The scripture says, ``No one who believes in him will be put to shame.''
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek;
the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him.
For, ``Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.''

GATHERING
CALL TO WORSHIP 1Kings 19:4-8
Leader: Full of fear, Elijah went a day's journey into the wilderness.
He sat down under a broom tree andprayed that he might die.
Left: ``I have had enough, Yahweh,'' he said.
``Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.''
Leader: He lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep.
Right: Suddenly, an angel of Yahweh touched him and said, ``Get up and eat.''
Left: He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals,
and a jar of water. He ate the cake and drank the water and then lay down again.
Leader: The angel of Yahweh came back a second time and touched him and said,
All: ``Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.''
Right: So he got up and ate and drank.
All: Strengthened by that food, Elijah traveled for forty days and forty nights
until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
Hymn: HWB 472 I am the bread of life

All: I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
One: Whoever eats of this bread, will live forever
All: And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.

God's reign is already present on our earth in mystery. When the Lord comes, it will be brought to perfection. That is the hope that inspires Christians. We know that every effort to better society, especially when injustice and sin are so ingrained, is an effort that God blesses, that God wants, that God demands of us.
-- Archbishop Oscar Romero(from a homily given on March 24, 1980)
Prelude
Words of Gathering
Call to Worship
Leader:  Do you have any wild hopes, or tame ones for that matter?
The possibility of acorns becoming towering oaks,
                           Or caterpillars blossoming into butterflies,
Or that dawn will chase away midnight fears?
                           Wild hopes!

People:  That all creation will learn the dance of joy,
That all humanity might taste the wine of peace,
That our loving God will become transparent through love.

All:              Recast the earth, O Lord,
And move our hearts with wild hopes.

Call to Evening ``Let Evening Come,'' by Jane Kenyon
One: Let the light of late afternoon shine through chinks in the barn,

Let the cricket take up chafing as a woman takes up her needles and her yarn.
All: Let evening come.
Left Side: Let dew collect on the hoe abandoned in long grass.
Let the stars appear and the moon disclose her silver horn.
Right Side: Let the fox go back to its sandy den.
Let the wind die down. Let the shed go black inside.
All: Let evening come.
Left Side: To the bottle in the ditch, to the scoop in the oats,
to air in the lung, let evening come.
One: Let it come, as it will, and don't be afraid.
God does not leave us comfortless,
All: so let evening come.

For humans, and Israel in particular, blessing God is a moral act. It is something we learn to do, and by doing it we are formed or reformed according to our true nature. Blessing is essentially the transformative experience of knowing and honoring God as the Giver; it means valuing the steady flow that sustains the world even above the gift of life that each of us receives and is in time constrained to relinquish. -Ellen Davis

SHARING OUR LIVES

Father, let be made holy your name.
         Let come your kingdom.
         Our bread
, our everyday bread, keep on giving to us, today.
And release for us our sins,
As we also release anyone obligated to us.
And do not bring us into testing. Amen.
(translation by Mary Schertz)

BENEDICTION
Re lease us into new life.
Let us go in peace.
